Green Zagreb

A green oasis for a break are on each step of the Zagreb. Close to the city Zagreb has Medvednica, nature park and Zagreb's popular hiking destination. The streets and squares of the city are intermittent with green parks and gardens. In the 19th century, the Strossmayer Promenade was built in the Upper Town, where today you can enjoy the most romantic panorama of the city. From the central Zagreb Ban Jelacic Square begins a series of squares and city parks leading to Lenuci "Green Horseshoe", named after the architect and urban planner who had it designed. The most popular among the green squares is Zrinjevac, known for the alley of plane trees. Fountains, a music pavilion and busts of notable figures take us back to that time.
On King Tomislav Square, named after the first Croatian king, train passengers have a unique view of the Art Pavilion and the Cathedral. Art Pavilion, a place of famous art events, was built as the Croatian Pavilion at the Millennium Exhibition in Budapest in 1896.
Nearby is another place to get away from the city noise. Botanical Garden has one of the richest collection of plants in Europe with around 10000 plant species.
Behind the walls surrounding the Cathedral there is a beautiful park Ribnjak.
In the eastern part of the city it is situated a spacious Maksimir park. The largest park in Zagreb was landscaped in the 19th century. It later became home to many animals when a zoo was opened here in the first half of the 20th century.
Outside of the city center on a hill there is a central cemetery Mirogoj. The monumental arcades, pavilions and domes of the late 19th century, the work of a prominent architect Hermann Bollé. It is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe, but also the beautiful park and an open-air art gallery.
